MassDOT's Highway Division has issued new Construction Standard Details for retrofitting Temporary Concrete Barrier to meet the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) Test Level 3 (TL-3) performance requirements. This action builds on other MASH procedures and requirements established earlier this year under Engineering Directive E-16-002.
Engineering Directive E-16-004, Temporary Concrete Barrier Retrofitted to MASH TL-3 allows for the use of the retrofitted barrier system on any active MassDOT construction project where a MASH TL-3 system is required, provided that all other site-specific dynamic deflection and length of need requirements can also be met by the barrier system. The Directive also renames and repurposes our previous Precast Portable Concrete Barrier system as “Temporary Concrete Barrier, MASH TL-2”, and allows for the continued use of this system in appropriate MASH TL-2 locations, as specified in E-16-002.
In addition, all of the new and revised temporary barrier drawings are contained in a new, full version of the Construction Standard Details. Engineering Directive E-16-005, December 2016 Construction Standard Details formally announces this edition of the document and requires this edition to be referenced in the plans and other contract documents of all projects advertised after January 22, 2017. The online edition of the December 2016 Construction Standard Details is available on the MassDOT website.
