Letter sent to Governor Maura Healey
The Massachusetts Water Works Association (MWWA) assembled a group of organizations (ACEC/MA, New England Water Environment Association (NEWEA), New England Water Works Association, RCAP Solutions, Inc., MA Coalition for Water Resources Stewardship, MA Water Environment Association) to write a letter to Governor Healey with our concerns about the December 2023 changes to the MA Uniform Plumbing Code which requires a unisex, accessible bathroom in unoccupied structures.
These changes add significant costs to projects, and in the case of some drinking water structures, could pose a public health threat from the discharge of sanitary waste near drinking water sources. We are seeing many variance requests denied. The coalition has made several attempts to engage in a meaningful discussion with the Plumbing Board [Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters] on this issue.
If you are in the water sector and encountering this issue on any of your projects, please reach out by email so that we have more examples to make our case that the plumbing code needs to be changed.
